Judy Akin

Music Background:

Both of her parents were actively involved in music productions and the ongoing cultivation of musical arts in Southern California. Her father, Kenneth (Kenny) Akin, managed his own studio on voice and dramatics, while producing and directing musical productions in Orange County. In Opera ("Madame Butterfly", "La Traviata", "Pagliacci" & many more) & Light Opera ("Kismet", "Chocolate Soldier", "Oklahoma" & many more) Kenny portrayed the lead tenor roles in numerous productions from Los Angeles to San Bernadino County. But, he had a vision for Orange County!!

Known as "Mr. Music of Orange County", Kenny Akin also toured throughout Europe to get a first hand report of theatre activities in an effort to help stimulate more music culture in Orange County. Unfortunately, he passed away before he ever saw the fruits of his vision or inspiration for a performing and cultural arts center...we now have today.

Judy grew up with the legacy that her father left behind and always lived with the spirit of music in her soul.

Dr. Judy Akin Palmer

Nursing Career:

Dr. Judy Akin Palmer
(R.N., Ph.D., CPSN)
is an innovative plastic surgery educator and advocate who has been devoted to promoting excellence in nursing for over 20 years. Her professional background includes neuroscience, neuro-intensive care, advanced wound care, trauma, orthopedics and general surgery. Judy’s commitment to plastic surgery patient care and her passion for improving plastic surgery nursing education emerged from her own life-changing experience with skin cancer, which led her to pursue further study and work in the fields of dermatology, reconstructive surgery, and advanced wound care.

As a Board Certified Plastic Surgery Nurse (CPSN), Judy works continuously to develop educational guidelines, tools, and strategies to help surgical practices, plastic surgery nurses, and patients work together to achieve better outcomes. It is her professional opinion that plastic surgery should be recognized as serious surgery and requires proper education. For several years, she has presented seminars on the risks, benefits, safety, and ethical issues of plastic surgery to communities in Southern California and has lectured to nursing students about the rewarding, diverse, and exciting field of plastic surgery nursing.

Judy works with Dr. Jay Calvert (Board Certified Plastic Surgeon) in Newport Beach and Beverly Hills.

Judy is the West Region Director for the American Society of Plastic Surgery Nurses (ASPSN), Chair of the Clinical Practice Committee (ASPSN), and Chair of the Southern California Chapter (ASPSN), while working to expand the membership and influence of the organization to other medical professionals. Over the past several years, she has been writing articles for the Plastic Surgery Nursing Journal (PSN) and is a featured presenter at the ASPSN Annual Meeting, speaking on subjects ranging from controversial plastic surgery topics in the media, current trends in plastic surgery nursing research, plastic surgery nursing roles, and many issues related to safety and ethics.

Judy and Sharon Fritzsche, MSN, RN, APRN, BC, a Family Nurse Practitioner working in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Loma Linda University Medical Center, were instrumental and influential in recently establishing plastic surgery nursing as a specific nursing specialty. They are the authors of “Plastic Surgery Nursing: Scope & Standards of Practice” that was approved and recognized by the American Nursing Association (ANA), Congress of Nursing, and House of Delegates as a nursing specialty. The book was published in 2005 by the ANA and includes the Plastic Surgery Scope of Practice Statement, Plastic Surgery Nursing Standards, and Standards of Practice and Professional Performance.
